最美的科普幼儿版 (Nature in Four Seasons) is a set of 6 stunning books about seasonal changes with nature and animals. Although my 4-year-old daughter 老大 was fascinated by the gorgeously detailed illustrations, she also enjoyed learning about science. I believe these books would also be intriguing for children in the early elementary school years. Each book is rich with explanations about the “why” of nature. 最美的科普幼儿版 Nature in Four Seasons Book Review
The books are illustrations are colorful, vivid, and realistic! Content includes basic scientific descriptions about the about the sun, the earth, trees, grass, flowers, and animals. As a non-fluent Chinese speaking family, this book was challenging as there was many new words that we don’t use in everyday conversation. Also, there were a lot of unfamiliar characters on each page for both my daughter and I, so I completely deferred the books to our Chinese teacher for reading and learning. With 33-34 pages/book and long passages on most pages, this series is more difficult than the typical picture book.
The only downside that I’m aware of is a translation error in the names of the moon phases. I have taken a picture of the questionable translation below, and it does not match the description on our other moon books.
Although there are 6 books in the series, our Chinese teacher has only 2 of the books. Here’s a peek at the inside of two of the nature science books! At the end of the post is a video of my 老大 reading her favorite page in the book!
Four Seasons of the Sun 太阳的四季
Here is a wood Moon phases puzzle from Etsy (available here) that we paired with the book. Although the puzzle is well made, you can easily DIY the moon phases puzzle with cardboard or paper plates to save on cost. Please note that this is the page which I think has been translated incorrectly.
Earth’s Seasons 大地的四季
老大 reading 太阳第四季
Below is a video of 老大 reading 太阳第四季 from a few months ago. This is her favorite page, which is about how the length of the day and night varies from season to season. At that time, we were working on slowing down (not rushing), use our finger to keep track on long passages, and not skipping words. 老大 tends to do skip words when she’s tired at bedtime. But I know that I need to work on not on interrupting her! You might notice toward the end of the video (1:45 mark), I mess up her flow and then pronounce 低 in the wrong tone (I mixed it up with 底 ). Thankfully, she wasn’t phased by my mispronounciation and read 低 correctly!
