A few months ago, my daughter wanted to try cloth painting with pipettes after reading and seeing the activity from our Chinese iSuper Science books. I cut up an old, white, cotton baby bodysuit, and she had fun squirting watered-down paint on the fabric!
Although my daughter knows that clothes can get stained from food and paint, this was a fun way to focus on learning the specific process.
This is an easy and fun STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) learning activity that teaches about color transfer with different fabrics.
Pipette painting is also a fun way to strengthen fine motor skills while enjoying process art! Be sure to check out the video of our experience at the end of the post!

- 颜色 (yánsè / color)
- 白布 (báibù / white cloth)

- 红, 橙, 黄, 绿, 蓝, 紫 (hóng, chéng, huáng, lǜ, lán, zǐ / red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
- 晾 (liàng / air-dry)
What you need for cloth painting with pipettes:
- Pipettes – We love these jumbo droppers! You can also try these other pipettes for different effects!
- Different fabrics (cotton, nylon, etc)
What to do:
- Pour paint into cup
- Add water
- Draw up paint with pipette
- Squirt onto cloth!
- Compare how different fabric materials take on colors in various ways
My daughter loved this activity, especially the bold, vibrant colors!
We use dinner plates as our flat surface, and the paint was very easy to wash off!
Then we hung the cloths to air-dry with string and clothespins!
Here’s a video of the Cloth Painting with Pipettes activity in action!
