多多和他的超级妈妈 (DuoDuo and His Super Mom) and 多多和他的超级爸爸 (DuoDuo and His Super Dad) is a cute series of picture books for young children. The series is written by the Chinese author 鲁礼敏. Both of my kids (4.5-year-old daughter, 22-month-old son) love these books! When we first got these books, I let my daughter stay up past her bedtime since she was so excited to read all ten of them! These books focus on the parent-child relationship in everyday settings, so it’s a wonderful set of books for bonding.

Review of 多多和他的超级妈妈 (DuoDuo and His Super Mom) and 多多和他的超级爸爸 (DuoDuo and His Super Dad)
This paperback series about a boy and his parents is very relatable for young children. Common everyday topics, such as cooking, shopping, going to the doctor, and choosing clothes are covered. At first glance, I was concerned that the pink and blue covers meant that the mother and father roles would be stereotypical. There are traditional roles such as the mom being an amazing cook and taking DuoDuo to the supermarket while the father is the amazing engineer. However, in the story about the mom cooking, the father is involved with gardening and preparing a salad. Also, I appreciate that in the father series, he is shown to affectionately and dynamically read stories to his son. He and the mother both take DuoDuo to the doctor’s office. Therefore, I am happy to see that both the mother and father are shown to be warm and loving toward their son.
The illustrations are relatively realistic cartoons, and the characters have Asian characteristics (eg smaller, normal-sized eyes compared to Taoshu). Since pop culture is dominated by Western features, I strongly feel that Asian children should be exposed to illustrations of characters that represent them. My kids enjoyed looking and talking about all of the details in the colorful pictures!
In terms of reading level, some pages have only 1-2 lines of text while others have 5-6 lines. Kids who have completed Greenfield and/or 四五快读 should be able to read most of these books independently. Since my daughter has completed the major learn-to-read series (eg, Sagebooks, Greenfield, 四五快读), this series was easy for her. However, this may be a good series to follow after Sagebooks if the parent is fairly literate in Chinese and can help the child learn new words from the stories.
Of these ten books, my daughter’s 2 favorites are:
- My Super Mom 我的超级妈妈: Each page has a shadow puppet of a different animal! Therefore, kids can have fun trying to recreate each of the shadow puppets.
- Dad, I Hate Going To The Hospital 爸爸，我讨厌去医院: My daughter is fascinated by anything medical-related, especially if there are illustrations of needles! This could be a helpful story to read before taking your child to the physician for a check-up.
