These are the best websites my children used when we were previously homeschooling. Although my children are now in school full-time, they still use some of these educational websites. (Two were created by me, pediatrician Dr. Betty Choi!)

I highly recommend these free websites to support bilingual education in children.

Duolingo

Duolingo language learning app for kids and adults

Duolingo is a free website and app that teaches 30+ languages, including Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, Arabic, Hindi, and more.

Note that English reading skills are required to use the app as translations in other languages are taught via English.

Unite for Literacy

Unite for Literacy Free Multilingual Books for Kids

Unite for Literacy is a fantastic website with free multilingual children’s books.

Kids will find topics like animals, sports, math, and other common interests on this free educational website. Most of the books feature real photographs of diverse people.

Audio narration is available in many languages, including Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Cup’ik, Danish, French, German, Greek (Ελληνικά), Hindi (हिंदी), Karenni, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Somali, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

Storybooks Canada

Storybooks Canada free educational website and online library for kids

This educational website promotes literacy and language learning in homes and schools.

Over 40 stories are available in English, French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Spanish, and other immigrant and refugee languages spoken in Canada.

Through the free stories, children can learn about feelings, hair, animals, and more.

Code.org is one of the best free non-profit coding programs on the internet. Kids in preschool through high school can learn how to program interactive stories, games, and animations.

Also, check out Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s free coding programs, Scratch (for ages 8-16) and Scratch Jr (for ages 5-7).

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) website has free resources about the planets and solar system!

How do educational websites compare to in-person learning?

As a pediatrician and mom, I recommend prioritizing natural, non-digital learning. This is especially important for toddlers and preschoolers.

However, educational websites can be helpful in moderation, especially when in-person learning is impossible. This is particularly true for older children, tweens, and teens.
