I created printable spinning emoji wheels for my kids as a silly way to chat about emotions!
My kids are familiar with emojis because they see my husband and I texting each other and friends. Out of curiosity, they are always wondering what faces we are sending each other!
Emojis are abstract and can be interpreted in different ways, but they have been a fun way for us to discuss the spectrum of emotions!

Spinning Emoji Emotions Wheel – Free Printable in English and Chinese
My daughter had fun spinning the emoji wheel and seeing what expression would be revealed!
When she first saw the missing mouth for 安静 (ānjìng / quiet), she was initially puzzled and asked “为什么没有嘴巴? (Wèishéme méiyǒu zuǐbā / Why is there no mouth)?” at least a dozen times!
I debated about what to put for that expression, and I thought it would be fun to see what my daughter would say if there was nothing!
I was so happy that she learned the new 安静 characters so quickly after asking about it so many times!
Emotions: Important vocabulary in Chinese, Pinyin, and English!
English is the main language for our family, and Chinese is the minority language that I speak with my children. Since they rarely get to see or hear Chinese outside of our home, I try to make the language as fun as possible!
Here are the words that we learned from the spinning emoji wheel:
- 快乐 / 快樂 (kuàilè / happy, joyful, cheerful)
- 高兴 / 高興 (gāoxìng / happy, glad)
- 兴奋 / 興奮 (xīngfèn / excited)
- 惊讶 / 驚訝 (jīngyà / surprised)
- 紧张 / 緊張 (jǐnzhāng / nervous)
- 安静 / 安靜 (ānjìng / quiet)
- 难过 / 難過 (nánguò / sad)
- 困惑 (kùnhuò / confused)
What you need for the Emoji Emotions Wheel:
Please review the Terms & Conditions before downloading any materials.
- Emoji wheel template:in simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, and English
- Laminating pouches
- Paper fastener
- Yellow cardstock
- X-ACTO knife
How to make the spinning emoji wheel:
- Print templates on yellow cardstock. Note that cardstock is recommended as regular printer paper is too thin and transparent (see the sad face in the above photo!)
- Laminate each page
- Cut out each circle
- Cut out triangle (this will be the opening for the mouth)
- Cut a slit in the center of each circle
- Insert paper fastener in the center of the circles indicated by light gray circle
**Please note that due to helpful feedback from friends, we have since replaced 亲热 to 困惑 (kùnhuò / confused).
Apparently, in many regions, 亲热 refers to sexual intimacy between adults – not something that you want to put on a printable!
Since I am learning Chinese along with my daughter, I really appreciate feedback from friends, family, and followers regarding the translation accuracy of printables that I’ve made for my kids. Therefore, I am happy to share them with other families!
Please don’t hesitate to give me feedback about them! Thank you!
