DIY Chinese Number Stamping Activity for Kids

Make your own Chinese number stamps! We put our art smocks on, used our whole dining table for this fun activity.  This Chinese number painting and stamping activity requires a little more prep than usual.  But once the Chinese number stamps are made, you can save and reuse them again.  For our bilingual family, this hands-on activity was a fun way to get creative while learning about beautiful Chinese characters!

What you need for the Chinese number stamping activity

  1. Foam sheets
  2. Paper roll (eg, upcycle from toilet paper or paper towels)
  3. Paint
  4. Paint brushes
  5. Large roll of paper
  6. Paper plates (or a wide basin to hold paint)
  7. Marker
  8. Glue (hot glue or superglue work best)
  9. Numbers template (free download)

How to set up the Chinese number stamping activity

  1. Cut out numbers from template
  2. Trace mirror image of each number onto foam sheet
  3. Cut foam
  4. Glue foam onto paper roll (note: if you use regular glue, you will have to hold the numbers in place for several minutes to dry)
  5. Squeeze paint onto plates
  6. Brush paint onto numbers
  7. Gently press & roll onto paper
