Originally written in French by Christian Jolibois, the 不一样的卡梅拉 La Petite Poules Chinese books are an entertaining read for kids!
When my 老大 (lǎodà) was younger, our Chinese teacher would bring 不一样的卡梅拉 books for us to borrow.
Since my daughter enjoyed them, I decided to buy this fiction series.
My friends with elementary school-aged kids raved about these books, so it seemed worthwhile to add to our home library.

不一样的卡梅拉 La Petite Poules Series in Chinese Review
不一样的卡梅拉 is an anthropomorphic series about this chicken who is on a quest to see the world.
卡梅拉 faces various challenges, such as getting lost at sea, figuring out how to lay an egg, and meeting alien chickens from other planets. While learning how to navigate difficulties, 卡梅拉 finds her partner, a red chicken, in the process.
The 不一样的卡梅拉 stories are….
- Funny and imaginative
- Appeal to a wide age range
- Illustrations are bright, witty, and engaging
不一样的卡梅拉 Reading level
Each page has anywhere from 2 lines of text to a couple of short paragraphs.
Compared to most Chinese picture books, 不一样的卡梅拉 books are longer with 48 pages per book. Each book takes approximately 15-25 minutes to read.
What age is best for 不一样的卡梅拉 books?
Although I generally prefer realistic books for toddlers and preschoolers, I do want them to know about stories that are popular in China.
My daughter first heard the 不一样的卡梅拉 stories when she was around 3 years old. After going through a period of disinterest, I was surprised to see her like them again at age 6. In fact, I think that she enjoys them better now that she’s older and can read them on her own.
Currently, my son is 3, and he enjoys listening to the 不一样的卡梅拉 books and talking about the action in the illustrations.
I have some friends with children ages 7-9 years, and their sons still like these books!
Various versions of 不一样的卡梅拉 La Petite Poules Series in Chinese
When you’re shopping for 不一样的卡梅拉 books, please note that there are a variety of Chinese versions on the market.
The sets include anywhere from 12 to 15 books depending on the publisher and bookstore. Amazon sells the base set of 12 books; we opted for a set of 13 books from China, and some versions come with 15 books.
The books also come in various hardcover or paperbook sizes. We ordered the largest available size because the font size was also larger in these books.
In addition, the 不一样的卡梅拉 books are available with or without Hanyu Pinyin. We prefer books without Pinyin. However, if you or your child depend on Pinyin, then you’ll be happy to know there are options!
