For the past few years, my children are constantly coming back to these 30 Chinese books in the My First Discovery Series 第一次发现丛书!

The realistic images and large variety of topics were immediately intriguing for my 3-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter and continue to interest them. Thanks to these books, I am also learning some interesting world facts in Chinese!

When I first bought My First Discovery Series 第一次发现丛书 books, we initially enjoyed talking through the pictures since the Chinese characters were too advanced for our beginner Chinese level.

Why we love these Chinese books!

Originally published in Europe, the My First Discovery Series 第一次发现丛书 has been translated into 28 languages and is one of the best sellers in China!

Kids are naturally curious about the real world, and the My First Discovery Series 第一次发现丛书 gives a wonderful introduction to animals, nature, transportation, and more!

The gorgeously illustrated, realistic Chinese books are interactive. Each book features transparent pages that make the book come alive!

For example, you can see how a volcano looks before and after an eruption. With a page flip, you can examine the front and back of a firefighter’s protective suit!

We also pair these books with hands-on learning activities like our Montessori Animals and Continents Activities and Nature Scavenger Hunt.

Although the text is relatively short, with only a few sentences per page, the vocabulary includes rich descriptions and technical terminology. The font is also relatively small.

Therefore, a child or parent should know at least 1000 Chinese characters to read these independently.

Comparison of paperback and hardcover versions

Some Chinese bookstores sell the hardcover version of this series. The benefit of hardcover includes spiral-bound pages that lay flat.

However, I prefer the paperback series sold at JoJo Learning due to cost and space.

Although light, each paperback book has thick, high-quality pages with strong binding that has held up to my active toddler!
