Learning about Jesus in Chinese

Since our family is not fluent in Chinese, most of our Christian resources are in English. We’re not quite ready to delve into Chinese Christian Bibles as we are prioritizing God’s word in our most fluent language.

However, when I found the 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise Chinese Christian music on iTunes last year, it gave us a chance to learn and express our love for Jesus in a new language.

I’m so grateful for 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise’s music, because one of our goals for learning Chinese was to talk about Jesus with more people.

1. Overview of 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise

讚美之泉 Stream of Praise is an interdenominational non-profit Christian organization dedicated to spreading the gospel through worship music.  Based in California (United States), they also have ministries in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The Stream of Praise website can be viewed in traditional Chinese or English, and they have an international online store.

2. Review of 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise DVDs and CDs

We have the following Stream of Praise albums:

  • Twinkle, Twinkle (printable lyrics for this album at the end of the post)
  • There is a God
  • Fill Our Hearts with Love

Each album is comprised of original compositions by Stream of Praise.

Lyrics in traditional Chinese are included with each album, but you can also access lyrics on the Stream of Praise website’s song database.

The DVDs have subtitles in traditional Chinese and English.  While the audio is mostly Mandarin, the singers and actors intermittently code switch and interject some English.

Both the CDs and DVDs have vocals from adults and children followed by mini lessons!

The lessons address common questions that children may have about God and the world, and at the end of the lesson, the teacher reviews a relevant verse.

I love that there is dialogue about Jesus between real people speaking Chinese!

3. Why did we buy 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise DVDs and CDs even though they are on iTunes and YouTube?

I first discovered 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise Chinese Christian music after searching for worship music on iTunes.  Then I came across their international store with DVDs and CDs.

Although we already had their Chinese music on iTunes, I am a fan of old-fashioned CDs because my kids can play music independently.  They learn to be careful and appreciate the delicate nature of CDs – that we can’t take beautiful music for granted.

Also, it’s one less time that I am accessing my phone (I am trying to cut down on my own screen time!)

Due to commercials and distracting “suggested videos” on YouTube, we prefer using DVDs.

Lastly, we want to support this wonderful Christian company by shopping in their store!

4. Examples of 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise Music Videos for Children

Of the 3 albums that we have, my daughter’s favorite album is Twinkle Twinkle.

However, my favorite is the Fill Our Hearts with Love DVD because because they teach different ways to pray in Mandarin Chinese as shown in this video.

This particular album also teaches a few songs on the ukulele!

At the latter half of each DVD, the teachers demonstrate how to do the dance moves.  My kids love to follow along and try to perform the dance moves!

In this video clip, I think the animated background is very distracting, but Stream of Praise has other demonstrations with natural backgrounds.

If you are unsure about which albums to purchase, you can preview their music on their website under the “children” tab in this link or on their YouTube channel.

Here is clip of How Awesome You Are [主祢真偉大], one of my favorite performances complete with orchestra!

As for my children, Jesus is My Best Friend is one of their favorite songs!

Here is a list of the mini-lessons on their YouTube channel.

5. My only complaint about 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise…

The only downside is that they have some animation in their videos.

Actually, it’s a very small percentage of each DVD, but in my humble opinion, the cartoons are very unnecessary.

6. Making an exception for screen time

For our family, the main benefit of videos is to see real Chinese Christians!  Generally, my kids have minimal screen time so that they have more interactive, social and physical activity.

However, we do allow limited Chinese screen time on the weekend. This shows them that people like them exist outside of our largely Caucasian, monolingual community.

I’m thankful that they almost always choose Stream of Praise!!!  (It’s true: they usually choose this over Ciaohu!)

7. Example of 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise Music Videos for Adults

Although we have only Stream of Praises’ children’s worship music, most of their music is actually geared for adolescents and adults.

I absolutely love this song, 君王就在這裡 Worthy Is the King!

Unfortunately, the language for the adult worship music is difficult for me to understand, because they sing and speak quickly.

8. 讚美之泉 Stream of Praise Lyrics in Chinese, English, and Pinyin – Free printables

The Stream of Praise website has lyrics of each song in English and traditional Chinese. Since my daughter and I want to learn to read and write the lyrics, I typed out all of the lyrics to the 一閃一閃亮晶晶 Twinkle Twinkle album.

Currently, we have the song lyrics in a 3-ring binder for convenience as shown in the photo above.

Please read this post about how we organize our CDs so that they are easily accessible by my children!

  1. THANK YOU for including printable files for some of the albums. We are an American family living in Taiwan and learning Chinese alongside our kids. We love listening to Stream of Praise and have purchased a few of their CDs. However, we can’t read the characters yet and its hard to be able to sing along without being able to read the lyrics. I currently just finished using google translate to copy and paste all the Chinese character lyrics to pinyin so I can print them and we can use them in the car this summer to really LEARN the songs and be able to sing along!

Twinkle Twinkle was next on my list and I just found it here right before I began doing it! Yay!

    1. Hi Elisa! Thank you so much for taking the time ot write and share that you’re learning Chiense with your children! Sorry for just seeing your message now, and I’m so glad to hear the printable lyrics are helpful! God bless your family!

  3. Ready to introduce Christian songs in Chinese to my kid. We attend all English service and the songs are only in English. Either the Chinese christian songs are too old ard it’s hard to find good quality ones or xhild doesn’t like it. Thanks for providing lyrics and downloads!

  8. I hope my kids would be more confident about their faith that they’ll be able to lead prayers and hymns. It would be great for them to practice songs with these.

  9. I recently adopted a 13 year old girl from China and she loves listening to music and we only listen to Christian music. I would love for her to hear and learn worship in her first language. I got her the “jesus” film in Mandarin and she loves watching it. Her first experience learning about Christ. This would expand her exposure to him and the gospel.

    1. Hi Cindy! May I ask where you found the film “Jesus” in Chinese? I would love to share this with my children. Thank you for sharing your story, and God bless your family!

      1. Christian book distributor. Make sure to order the dvd that has multiple languages on it. Was like $10 The whole thing is over dubbed in Mandarin and many other languages depending on what you choose. My adopted Polish children listen to it in Polish, so money well spent.

  10. Wow! I didn’t know SOP has songs and DVDs geared toward kids! I would love to win this since I began to homeschool my three children and they are ABC’s (American born Chinese). These CDs and DVDs would be great for introducing beautiful songs of our faith in Chinese–accomplishing two goals with one task!

  11. I have two albums and I’m ready to have more! Am thinking of getting a few more to bless some of my friends (who are not Christians but wanting to learn mandarin- I’ve shared that my kids listen to these songs daily!)

  12. The kids love singing Chinese songs and these CD/DVDs would be a wonderful way to enhance their view of our great God!

  13. I had a chance to go to their concert for the live performance many years ago when I visited my family in Seattle. I am not Christina but wa truly moved by the beautiful music and their devotion towards God. I still think of that concert many years after and so have no idea they have CDs and iTunes. Thank you for the info and thank you for all the awesome child led activities. You have been a great inspiration 🙂

  14. I started playing stream of praise on Alexa for my 27 month old. He loves it!!! He would tell me, “stream of praise” when he wants to listen. I am learning Mandarin with my son and this would be great for both of us (and my 5 month old can listen too even if he is still am infant).

  15. We have just printed off the simplified chinese lyrics with pinyin. Thank you for making the fruit of your labour FREE for the rest of us! We are so blessed to have stumbled upon your website, and may your reward be manyfold in Heaven! From a Malaysian Chinese mom living in London trying her best to teach her 3 British-born children Chinese, and the ways of the Lord (not necessarily in that order)!

    1. Hi Jia! Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and leave the kind message! Wonderful to meet you and learn about your family! Many blessings to your family!

  16. Hi,
Thank you for your post. We love Stream of Praise! Our chinese church uses their songs. Our family has song several of their songs over the years. I didn’t realize they had cds/dvds for sale. We homeschool our children – they are ages 10, 8 and 5.

Which one do you recommend buying? I tried clicking on your link – but the link does not work:
“If you are unsure about which albums to purchase, you can preview their music on their website under the “children” tab in this link or on their YouTube channel.”

    thanks!
